What should you wear when giving birth?
There are a lot of decisions to be made when it comes to the hospital stay for a new mother and one item that is often overlooked is what a new mother should wear when giving birth. With all of the excitement and anticipation surrounding a new baby, wearing something comfortable and easy to move in is a must.
Here are our top tips on what to wear for both a vaginal and Caesarian section birth.
If you are having an elective c-section delivery you most likely will be given a hospital gown to wear. This gown will be typically loose fitting, lightweight and long with ties at the back which can be easily opened and closed. The gown would simply be lifted upwards for the anaesthetist to access your back for an epidural and for the surgeon to access your abdominal.
If you're having a vaginal delivery, you'll want something comfortable that allows easy access to your vagina and perineum (the area between your vagina and anus). For example, leggings with an elastic waistband and no drawstring that can be pulled down easily. Yoga pants can be a good choice as they have a relatively low-hung crotch area whilst be super stretchy and even loose fitting shorts can be an option. Any tops should ideally have poppers or zips in front so they can easily be removed during labour.
From our own experiences as Mothers', we opted for a Robe with an easy access tie to open at a moments notice just like ours here. Also a long-ish nighty which can be hoisted up quickly is a good option and it also means you can keep it on after birth with free-flowing access below when you will need to change your sanitary towels.
Which fabric is best?
Ideally, a lightweight and moisture-wicking fabric would be really good such as our bamboo collection. It's naturally hypoallergenic, so great if you have sensitive skin, naturally antibacterial and it also regulates your body temperature so you'll never overheat or get too cold. Lots of our happy Mummies find that our Maternity Pyjamas and Maternity Robes are excellent at soaking up any form of liquid such as bodily fluids, baby posset and / or breastmilk from leaking boobs thanks to our bamboo fabric that is four times more absorbing than standard cotton.
